Most motors create a rotary motion yet the work we need to do is often linear.
We can use encoders to track the rotary position of typical motors, gearboxes to speed up or slow down the rotary motion into the speed range of the application, then in this case we will use a pulley and belt to convert that rotary motion to a linear motion. In this video we go through the math to covert our rotary position to a linear position such as inches or millimeters.
