If you are looking into the UL 508A Industrial Control Panel certification then you are going to see references to the MTR exam which is a newer requirement for UL.

MTR stands for Manufacturer Technical Representative and you are required to have at least one person at your facility that has passed this test in the last three years.

This isn’t a test that you want to walk into without doing a lot of studying and preparation. There is a MTR practice exam on UL’s website and you need to take it several times before you attempt this exam.

So what is in the exam? While I won’t give any details in this video, I will give you a rough outline. It is a 4 part exam consisting of 20 questions each for a total of 80 questions, you have 2 hours for each part, and you must get 80% of the questions right in each part. Now a grade of a 80% may sound easy but don’t underestimate the difficulty of this exam. Take the practice exam.

The first part of the exam is on general information about UL 508A. The second part is on enclosed panels and power circuits The third part is on control circuits, ratings, markings, and enclosure results. And the fourth and in my opinion the toughest part is on SCCR Short Circuit Current Ratings.
